SECURITY GUARD TO STARDOM!

One of Luton's biggest talents is on his way to musical stardom after capturing the hearts of over a million Marks & Spencer customers with his sales floor serenades! Classically trained singer David Gregory has followed a long and winding road to the release of his debut album through HMV and Borders, and owes much of his current success to his former role as a Security Guard for the high street giant. David, worked at a number of their stores in the South East for a stint after reaching the semi-finals of Channel 4’s award winning series ‘Operatunity’ in 2003. He said, “Whilst working at Luton store, I was asked by my Store Manager to sing on the sales floor to publicise the launch of the company’s new reward credit card ‘&more’. So I swapped my uniform for a tuxedo and sang the card’s signature tune ‘That’s Amore’. It went down a terrific storm with the customers and the staff loved it too.”

As a result, David who comes from Luton in Bedfordshire, soon found himself entertaining millions of customers throughout the UK with the majority mistaking his live performances for piped music. He said, “When they realise I am actually singing, they’re totally amazed. “Why haven’t we heard more about you and why haven’t you got a CD available?” They would frequently ask.” David, a Graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, listened to his fans and has now released an album which showcases his fabulous singing voice via a selection of classic tunes ranging from Musicals and Big Band, to Opera. He has also embarked on a promotional tour and is fast becoming a man in serious demand with Television, Radio and the Press showing a lot of interest in him.

A former Policeman with the Metropolitan Police Service, David has been performing for many years. In 1994, he sang on 'Songs Of Praise', which earned him the nickname 'PC Pavarotti'. David was later reminded of this when he was engaged by the Decca Record Company to record some sample tracks for consideration by Luciano Pavarotti prior to the recording of his farewell album ‘Ti Adoro’. Prior to that, he appeared in Concert at the Royal Festival Hall and last year, was fast tracked by the BBC onto their popular quiz ‘The Weakest Link’ to serenade the 'Queen of Mean' Anne Robinson. However, David said it was singing in M&S that really helped his career to take off. He said, "I am so used to people saying 'no' that now they are finally saying 'yes', it's just brilliant!"

ARIAS IN M&S!

Every so often, for a few hours around 14.00pm, shoppers in Marks & Spencer, Covent Garden, are treated to musical extravaganza courtesy of David Gregory - a Baritone of rare calibre. All proceeds go directly to Macmillan Cancer Relief.

When we went to M&S to hear David sing, we found some other performers who weren’t shy of the camera. Pineapple Dance Students Chloë Taylor-Gee, Hattie Jackson, Remi Reid, Kitty Harris and Lola Wallis, were shopping for their lunch in store.

David is at M&S Covent Garden several times a month from around 13.00pm and it’s worth stopping to listen to his excellent voice whilst doing your shopping. Confirmed dates for this month are Thursday the 8th and Friday the 30th. You can also contribute to a very worthy cause.

MUSIC WHILE YOU SHOP!

A former Department Store Security Guard put a smile on shoppers' faces as he entertained them over the lunch hour in WGC last week.

David, who used to work as a Security Guard for Marks & Spencer, blasted out popular numbers last week to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Relief.

Manager Stuart Powell said: "On a dreary summer's afternoon, it seemed a good idea to cheer customers up and raise money for a good cause. He went down extremely well!"
