After twenty plus years in journalism and many of those years speaking about politics and world affairs, I have seldom had the experience I have enjoyed over the past six months. As I have begun to travel the country to speak about my book, people often thank me for speaking about my faith openly and honestly. People appreciate me discussing what truly matters to them: a relationship with God and an attempt to deepen my faith. I’ve been on this journey a long time and it isn’t easy. It doesn’t keep me from making mistakes or stumbling. But I feel connected to my audience when I open up about how a faith path has inspired me.
A year ago, almost to the day, I left NBC News under pretty difficult circumstances that were written about widely. A year later I was back in New Hampshire picking up our kids from summer camp at Camp Merrowvista, once again deeply inspired by the camp’s motto: “My own self, at my very best, all the time.” I love that my kids have been exposed to this positive lesson. I know I need to be reminded of this motto every day. But that is what draws me to a spiritual life. A pastor I know says we are constantly in a state of “being and becoming” who God intends us to be. That’s what the journey is about.
My book, How’s Your Faith is about my return to faith as an adult. It’s about that journey. It’s also about how unlikely it was that a guy who grew up with Jewish identity, but little belief, who plunged into television journalism at age 18, could be awed by a spiritual journey in middle age. What a revelation.
On this site, I will write about my book tour. I’ll write about the conversations I have with people along the way, the feedback I get and the lessons I know I am about to learn from others. I will write about what and who inspires me. I hope you will check in often and participate in some of the discussions I’d like to start here.
There is also plenty about my book, speeches and appearances in the months ahead as I share my book with you.
God bless, and oh yeah, how’s your faith?
